Out of this world fashion.

Out of this world fashion.

If you’re lucky enough to buy your clothes from Prada, will your next purchase be a nice dress, a pair of trousers or a spacesuit?

Whilst Prada is renowned for its luxury fashion items it’s expanding it’s offerings to what can only be described as “out of this world”.

Axiom Space and Prada Collaborate on Spacesuit Design for NASA’s Lunar Mission

A collaboration between space technology and high fashion was unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan last week. Axiom Space and Prada presented the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit, which will be worn by astronauts during NASA’s Artemis III mission—the first crewed mission to return to the Moon since Apollo.

Innovation Meets Fashion

This partnership merges Axiom’s advanced space technology with Prada’s expertise in design and high-performance materials. Prada’s role extended beyond looks though as they will be contributing to the development of functional materials that can withstand the extreme conditions of the lunar surface. Not only will the suit be white to reflect heat and protect astronauts from high temperatures, but Prada’s innovative sewing techniques also ensure improved durability and comfort.

Cross-Industry Collaborations

For business students, this collaboration highlights the power of cross-industry partnerships. Axiom Space’s President, Matt Ondler, emphasised that by blending creativity with engineering, the partnership has redefined what is possible in spacesuit development. Prada’s Chief Marketing Officer, Lorenzo Bertelli, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how pushing boundaries is central to both companies’ ethos.

Enhancing Lunar Exploration

The AxEMU spacesuit represents a leap forward in astronaut safety and performance. Designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the lunar south pole, the suit offers astronauts enhanced flexibility and includes specialised tools to aid exploration. It has been designed to accommodate a wide range of body types, ensuring inclusivity in space missions (although my guess is that most of the Astronauts using it will be a fairly athletic and healthy shape…).

Key Takeaways for Business Students

For business students, this case study illustrates the importance of adaptability and innovation in today’s economy. As industries evolve and new markets emerge—such as the commercial space industry—companies can look beyond their traditional roles and explore collaborations that blend different expertise. Prada’s venture into space tech shows that even in industries like fashion, opportunities can arise in unexpected fields,

Additionally, this partnership highlights the increasing role of public-private cooperation in space exploration, with Axiom Space leveraging its agreement with NASA to bring new players, like Prada, into the space industry.

As the commercial space sector expands, the potential for business opportunities in logistics, materials, engineering, and design will continue to grow. Axiom Space and Prada’s collaboration offers a glimpse into the future of space exploration, where innovation thrives through the fusion of expertise from diverse sectors.
